Duke Nukem 3D - a cult computer game in the genre of a first-person shooter, created by the company 3D Realms (division Apogee) in 1996. Duke Nukem 3D is the logical continuation of the games of the Duke Nukem series, but if the first two games from the series were two-dimensional platformers, then the third part was performed in the then popular Doom style (pseudo-three-dimensional corridors, first-person view, battles with various kinds of cold, , as well as fictional weapons). In fact, Duke Nukem 3D was Apogee's response to a series of Doom games, as well as to Heretic and Hexen from id Software, with which Apogee had long-standing competing relationships since the time of Wolfenstein 3D. But the new, three-dimensional part of Duke Nukem did not become another clone of Doom, it managed to compete with the more technically advanced Quake that was released at the same time. Moreover, it brought to the gaming industry so many innovations and unexpected solutions, which rightfully can challenge the title of the progenitor of many modern shooters, including a series of games Half-Life.
